Typically the blogs that I write for the Forgione Lumber Company website are directly
related to firewood and sawmill operations.Today’s blog is a little different.
Earlier this afternoon, I stopped by a fast food restaurant for my food and drink. I paid for
my meal in cash. My change was handed to me without any pennies. While I was waiting for my
order, I read a sign that was on the counter. Pennies will no longer be given out as change. If
you haven’t heard, the U.S. Mint made its last pennies on November 12,2025. The U.S. Mint
claims it costs 3.7 cents to mint one penny. Apparently all transactions will be rounded to the
nearest nickel. So, what do we do with all these pennies? I know of people that hoard pennies.
My suggestion to the United States government is to launch a campaign to encourage people to
turn in their pennies for cash at a financial institution for cash. First of all,the penny hoarders
would benefit from making some extra cash and at the same time, reintroduce pennies into the
financial stream.
I”m sure you have noticed, the days are getting longer. By the end of January, sunset will
be close to 5:00 pm. The sun is getting stronger and you can begin to feel the early warmth.
This means I can work outside to produce more firewood.
